There was a Game Stop in the mall across the street from me, but it closed down before this comic got posted. But there still is a store selling mangas, D&D, etc… so far.
The market for hard media is almost dead, even before Covid-19.
I haven’t bought a console system in years; do they not download their games now? Steam sells me my PC games (or PC-adapted console games) now, pretty much exclusively.
Although… Covid-19 HAS actually cracked open a new opportunity for hard media again, given that it’s repeatedly shut down theatres.
I was waiting to see Wonder Woman 1984, but the theatres shut down for the first time right before the release, and when they temporarily reopened, they were still obligated to keep showing the older movies that didn’t get a fair run before the shutdown, so WW84 was pushed back even farther, then they shut down again.
The movie would become available on networks not available in my country, and streaming services I didn’t want to register for for the sake of a single movie (or TV show… I’m looking at you, CBS and Picard!) so I actually ended up waiting until WW84 ended up on a shelf in Walmart, in DVD form!
…This led to the discovery that my latest laptop doesn’t have a DVD drive… I don’t own a DVD player anymore either…
A long story of comical errors later, and I’m borrowing a DVD player from a 76 year old man I look after, medically speaking.
I’m borrowing tech from a great-grandfather to watch a new(ish) movie! >_>
