Could any kid in middle school even recognize a manual typewriter? I spent at least half my naval career pounding the keys on them, some quite possibly older than I was, usually pounding hard so to get legibility on that bottommost of three or four carbon copies.

Considering they’re typing only with their thumbs, that’s actually pretty good.
The ol’ golden standard for professional secretary jobs was 60wpm, but that was touch-typing on a full keyboard, with all your fingers.
